Martin & Albert

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Guido beat me to the new MLK Jr. Memorial, but I was very happy to be able to finally get a chance to see and sketch it myself. Judging from the crowds of people trekking across the mall it obviously has an immense amount of meaning for everyone who visits it.

While I was on the Mall, I thought I would check out one of my other favorite, albeit less well known memorials on the Mall. The Einstein Memorial by the National Academy of Sciences.

MLK Memorial Washington DC

MLK Memorial Sketch during the opening week August 2011. 1st sketch done of the memorial by a member of the public since opened.

Abraham Lincoln Memorial

I love Abraham Lincoln and his Memorial is super cool, this time a lot of kids wanted to see what I was doing and take pics of me.

Washington Monument

Washington Memorial, sketching after work and I got the attention of the Secret Service for doing so.

Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill, I began to have followers and I got a lot of positive complements from people in the area.

mall sketches (part 10)

during the month of april the center of the mall had been turned into a habitat for a human sized easter bunny. i watched sometimes as parents put their crying children on the lap of the ginormous rabbit and wonder why anyone thinks this is a good idea. but, it gave me something else to draw: on this day i focused on the fabric butterflies that are suspended from the ceiling.

mall sketches (part 9)

i recently got a new (to me) pair of wing tip shoes, and sketched them during lunch because all the furniture was moved around to accommodate the easter bunny photo setup and i could not get a spot facing anyone. then i just started writing a bunch of stuff. :)

mall sketches (part 7)

this installment of mall sketches features hands - one is a sketch of my hand, and the other is a sketch of some mannequin hands that were in the window of one of the mall stores. i like to draw hands because they are challenging to get right, and i need all the practice i can get!

as always, to follow this project, click on "the mall" tag at the bottom of this post to see all of my mall sketches posted thus far. essentially, i go out during lunch and see what i can see in the mall.  not being an overly girly-girl, i often don't know what to do with myself in a mall (shop? nah!), so i opt to sketch my surroundings almost daily.

mall sketches (part 6)

sometimes people fall asleep on the couches in the center of the mall... and this is cool because i can draw them for a lot longer than if they are awake and moving or getting up and leaving. :)

mall sketches (part 5)

i finally scanned some of my newer mall sketches in so that i could share them.  here are a couple of people reading...

i am sad that i will not be able to attend the quarterly sketchcrawl on saturday, but will be sketching where i am able and will be with my fellow sketchcrawlers in spirit!

mall sketches (part 4)

i have lots of new mall sketches to scan in (i have been slacking in the digital department of this project!), but here's an older one that i sketched of myself blind contour style based on my reflection in one of the metallic orbs that are found on the railings of the second floor of the mall corridors. more to come soon...

mall sketches (part 3)

as promised, more mall sketches. for more on this project, click the "the mall" tag at the bottom of this post to see the original post i made for this project with more of an explanation as to what i'm doing here, as well as the other sketches i've posted thus far. :)

-----------

i try this style of drawing every once in a while just to shake things up a bit. i'm a big fan of contour drawing in case you didn't realize from previous posts, but i like to try other styles like this too:

another quick sketch of my hand with a small bit of my handwriting included:

mall sketches

because of my new job, i suddenly find myself with an hour lunch break in areas where lots of people are - the mall!  so, in an attempt to better my drawing skills and to stay active with drawing, i have taken it upon myself to eat and then head out to find human subjects to sketch. however, this can sometimes be challenging, since i am often far away from my subjects or they move before i am anywhere near finished. so, i'm going to post some of my drawings here to share over time.

this particular drawing is from one of those days when i just wasn't finding too many people to draw, so i resorted to drawing my hands. :)

and here's one of actual people!  i like to find a spot in the lounge areas with chairs facing toward the center so i can easily see everyone. with a lot of these drawings, i have under a minute to get something down on paper, as people either shift positions or leave outright.  it is a challenge, but also sort of enjoyable to race against the clock, so to speak.  as i spend more time in the area i'm sure i will find the best vantage points to draw from...

i'll post more in future days / months as i draw and scan them...
